Description

A large, armored ankylosaurid, Gobisaurus has a relatively low standing profile and a back featuring rows of defensive bone nodules all the way down to a heavy club tail. Compared to other ankylosaurs, this animal has quite large nostrils and eyes which implies that these senses were particularly beneficial in its natural environment.

Discovery

Around 1959, a series of expeditions uncovered fossils of an ankylosaurid in the Gobi Desert, but this specific find received little attention compared to other discoveries in these digs. Three decades later, in selecting fossils for a travelling exhibition, a skull was chosen for display labelled with the then informal name ‘Gobisaurus’. It was only years later, around 2001, that the species was formally described and its name promoted from a nomen nudum.

Paleoecology

The Early Cretaceous Gobi Desert was no less challenging an environment than it is today, but Gobisaurus thrived in those arid scrublands. Like many ankylosaurids, it features blunted teeth that are perfect for stripping and processing tough vegetation. More unique to this animal though, its large nostrils and eyes would have helped it locate the sparse pockets of vegetation spread throughout its prehistoric Mongolian ecology.
