Description
Suchomimus was a spinosaurid dinosaur found in Africa. Its name means 'crocodile mimic' because of its crocodile-like snout. This snout would have been better suited for hunting fish than the usual theropod skulls like Tyrannosaurus. Only a single species is known for this genus, and unlike Spinosaurus it lacked the large sail on its back.
Discovery
Suchomimus fossils were first in recovered in 1997 from Gadoufaoua in Niger. Other partial skeletons and fragments have been found in the wider Erlhaz Formation since then.
Paleoecology
In the Early Cretaceous epoch, the Sahara Desert was very different to what it is today. Back then it was a lush, swampy environment.
