Facts
The name Megistotherium means both "greatest beast" and "bone crusher." This hyaenodontid weighed over 1000 pounds.
The Megistotherium is related to hyenas. In size, however, it is closer to a modern polar bear!
Like most Cenozoic meat-eaters, Megistotherium was most succesful during the Eocene Epoch, before it was displaced by more modern predators.
Megistotherium likely hunted Woolly Mammoths for food. Scientists believe this because they have found dislocated Mammoth bones grouped with Megistotherium fossils.
