Platypterygius is a dolphin-like ichtyosaur that roamed around the Eromanga Sea, currently inland Australia.

Platypterygius' name comes from its close-knit fin bones, which gave it a 'flat wing' to reduce water resistance.

Platypterygius was one of the first ichthyosaurs to give birth to live pups, instead of laying eggs.

Platypterygius gave birth to its young tail first, to prevent drowning during birthing.
