Description

With their distinctive dorsal plates, Stegosaurus is one of the most universally recognized dinosaurs, and as such a popular attraction to Jurassic World parks. These herbivores have been noted for the small brain pan in relation to their body mass. Its name means 'roofed lizard'.

Discovery

Stegosaurus fossils have been recovered from North America and in Portugal. They were first described in the Bone Wars book from remains extracted from the Morrison Formation in Colorado. Most of the collected Stegosaurus remains have come from this region.

Paleoecology

The Morrison Formation is believed to be a semi-arid region with wet and dry seasons upon flat floodplains. Conifers formed river-lining forests, and other vegetation included tree ferns, cycads, ginkgoes and sparse Araucaria trees.
